The oldest continually running race formula in the world (older than F1), 750 Formula is believed by many to be the ultimate in fun, low cost competition – and the UK’s most affordable ‘slicks & wings’ racing. These are sports-prototype racing cars with an offset driving position and small passenger space, lapping with times that defy the budget. Many cars have been individually designed and built by enthusiasts over the years but there are also kits available.
Engine
The Fiat 1108cc ‘FIRE’ engine is used in fairly standard form to keep costs down and reliability up, with a control camshaft to regulate performance. Tuning is largely restricted to balancing and skimming the head. Induction is restricted to one carburettor choke while the exhaust system is free.
Transmission
Four-speed or five-speed if using the FIAT transaxle, lightened flywheels permitted but limited-slip differentials and any form of traction control is prohibited.
Suspension
Design is free, but cars must either use a live rear axle, or a FIAT transaxle (with the standard five-speed gearbox/final drive) alongside independent rear suspension.
Tyres
The formula uses control slick tyres which tend to last the majority of a season and are often available second hand. Competitors at the sharp end of the grid will probably use no more than two sets per year, and wets are free.
Rounds & Classes
Typically 12-14 rounds in a championship season, spread across double-header and triple-header race weekends. There is an additional ‘Class B’ for drivers who have not finished on the podium, in the top six in the main championship or won the Class B Championship in the last five years. Trophies are awarded for the top three finishers in Class B as well as overall.
Costs
Club membership is £95 for 12 months, season registration is £145, and double-header weekend entry fees (qualifying and 2 x 15min races) are typically between £350 and £420 depending on the circuit. Cars can be purchased secondhand from approximately £5000.
