Formula Vee

Overview

The most cost effective route into single-seater racing in the UK, for more than 55 years. A variety of constructors offer a complete car or a bare chassis and many cars have been converted from Formula Ford ‘Kent’ chassis. Wings and other aerodynamic aids are prohibited.

Engine & Transmission

1300cc air-cooled VW Type 1/2/3 engine, with restrictions on valve sizes, bore & stroke. Compression ratio and camshaft are free. Induction is two chokes, with restrictor plates. The VW Type 1 gearbox must be used, along with set VW ratios. Limited slip differentials and all forms of traction control are prohibited.

Chassis

Single-seaters, of free design and construction. Chassis are available from a variety of constructors, self-designed or often converted Formula Ford ‘Kent’ chassis. Wings and other aerodynamic aids are prohibited.

Suspension

Front is VW axle, hubs, stub axles and torsion bar. The majority of the VW rear suspension components are used.

Brakes & Tyres

VW ‘Beetle’ discs (or drums) on the front with VW drums on the rear. All cars must use the Hoosier control tyre.

Rounds

There are typically seven double-header race weekends, comprising 14 rounds each season.

Classes

In addition to the main championship, cars may also be eligible for Class B awards depending on technical specification.

Costs

Club racing membership is £95 for 12 months, season registration is £160, and double-header weekend entry fees (qualifying and 2 x 15min races) are typically between £380 and £420 depending on the circuit. Eligible cars are available secondhand from just £6000.
